Description
Marshalltown, Nova Scotia. 1967-1968. A naive painting of a pair of oxen painted a bright brown with red yoke and trim set against stark white snow. The piece is framed by bright green coniferous trees. Oxen in Winter is recognized as one of Maud's most iconic images. These powerful animals were an important part of Maud's early life in Nova Scotia. A team of ten oxen was used to move the tiny house in Marshalltown that would eventually bear the sign "Paintings for sale" and become the home of Digby's most famous citizen. Oxen in Winter is a serial image that spans two decades. This example dates to the late 1960s when Maud adopted the full signature "Maud Lewis". Signed, "Maud Lewis", lower right corner. Frame marked, "Oxen", on verso. Also marked, "1", in multiple places. Beaverboard marked, "1", verso.
