English. c. 1910. Brass. Frederick Bateman & Co Ltd. were opticians and instrument retailers at various locations in London. This microscope design is typical of those made by the Swift company so possibly was made by them and retailed by Bateman. This microscope is of all brass construction, the base being chemically darkened. Accessories include one ocular, one objective and a substage wheel of stops. Around the base of the microscope is engraved the name Frederick Bateman & Co Ltd. The microscope tube has been polished, but the remainder of the instrument retains the original lacquer finish, now darkened in some areas. The mirror is in good condition. The coarse and fine adjustments function properly and provide focus on a slide. A slide-around type stage is moved manually. The mahogany case shows some minor abrasions, some shrinkage to the door panel, two splits in the back panel, and is lacking the lock. Case: 10.5"H x 7.5"L x 6"W.
