Description
American. 1870-1885. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co., Sandwich, MA. Glass, metal. This extremely rare figural stand lamp features a frosted Madonna, with a round ribbed scalloped base. On top of the Madonna sits a top pegged metal connector. The metal cylinder, which contains the clock-work mechanism, is mounted on top of this peg. A blue ball shade rests on top of the metal cylinder. The shade is painted with black Roman numerals I through XII, and has a metal ring sitting on top of the shade. An Olmstead miniature lamp, colourless with white milk glass shade, fits into the metal cylinder. This lamp was used to illuminate the clock face at night. When the clock mechanism was wound, it moved the small pendulum and also turned the globe. The stationary clock hand marked the correct time. Keys included. Madonna lamp is marked, "JEK90.16." Olmstead miniature lamp is marked, "Kaiser II" on font and shade. Font marked “L. H. OLMSTEAD NEW YORK.”
