Description
Canadian. 1850s. Ash, iron, leather. Rare early bentwood collar, made of ash, with five protruding hand-forged iron spikes. There were two basic solutions to the problem of weaning a calf. One was to prompt the cow to give the calf a good swift kick each time it attempted to feed. The other was to discourage the calf with devices designed to prod the mother. This well constructed bent-wood muzzle, cushioned by the leather straps, was tied onto the calf's head and the forged spikes took care of this method of weaning.
Condition
Good condition. Most of leather elements are missing.
Medium
Ash, iron, leather.
Provenance
Featured in Primitives and Folk Art (Thuro, p.44, Plate a). From the Catherine Thuro Collection.
