Description
Canadian. 1926-1941 Oil on board. Francis (Frank, Franz) Hans Johnston was a founding member of the Group of Seven and a member of the Ontario Society of Artists as well as an associate member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. This painting exhibits an interesting perspective of the trees portrayed amplifying the evergreens in the foreground. As in this example Johnston was very adept at bringing out light effects in the atmospheric elements: clouds with blue sky. His style is distinctive. Here, he verges on a clear reality while retaining an aspect of Canadian Impressionism learned from his years with the Group of Seven. Signed "Franz Johnston" recto' lower left. Verso titled 'Pines Near Penetang' and 'by Franz Johnston' in the artist's hand.
