Description
Canadian. Ca: 1956. Oil on beaverboard. Chicks and Hens by Maud Lewis. This early quality image is rare. Maud Lewis scholar and expert, Alan Deacon, comments that this image, “is the only example I’ve seen in 55 years of collecting. It is rare.” Lewis, in this richly coloured painting was consistent in depicting happiness and joy through hens and their chicks in a country setting subject. As well, she has marked springtime with the prominent field of Narcissus. The image covers the board in unusually strong colour with red and yellow buildings highlighted with black while the vivid yellow further catches the eye with the field of flowers and birds. Signed, "Lewis" lower right.
