ARTIST
Maud Lewis (1901–1970) has become one of Canada’s most renowned artists, the subject of numerous monographs, novels, plays, documentaries, and even a feature film. She was born into relative comfort and obscurity, and died in poverty, though enjoying national fame. She overcame severe physical challenges to create a unique artistic style, and sparked a boom in folk art in her home province of Nova Scotia. Though she rarely left her tiny house, her works have travelled around the world, and in the decades since her death, she has become an iconic figure, a symbol of Nova Scotia, and a beloved character in the popular imagination.

Description
Canadian. Marshalltown, Nova Scotia. Ca: 1964. Mixed media. Covered Bridge in Winter by Maud Lewis is a serial image found only in the 1960s. Little else needs to be said for the favourite season that Lewis captured so well. The composition features three sleighs; two of which are in her favoured colour of red. The prominent snow-laden evergreen trees and the novel covered bridge add strong and interesting focal points in the foreground. Signed lower right, "Maud. Lewis".

Excellent overall condition with minor toning.

Provenance
Purchased directly from Maud Lewis by the late Dr. Marjorie Smith in 1965. Smith willed to the her niece, the late Kathleen Smith, who in turn willed it to her husband, the current owner. Offered subject to reserve. The winner will be provided with a letter of authenticity.
