Description
Canadian. Marshalltown, Nova Scotia. Ca: 1970. Oil and marker on masonite. Covered Bridge in Valley by Maud Lewis. Lewis ended her career the way she started it: by recreating the lighthearted and nostalgic images of her youth. One of Lewis' most popular and favoured subjects was the snow covered trail. Here, an open snow covered trail beckons the viewer. This is one of Lewis' final works. Signed, lower right corner, "Maud. Lewis."
Condition
Excellent.
Medium
Oil on beaverboard.
Provenance
Purchased in 1970 directly from Lewis by the current owner Jean Doucet. Doucet's wife, a teacher, sent him to Lewis routinely with extra cloths, rags and other school supplies. Doucet also helped the ailing Lewis sort her mail. For his help, Lewis insisted he take his choice of painting. After his selection, he insisted to pay $10. She refused, but he managed to persuade her to accept $5. The winner will be provided with a letter of authenticity.
