Description
Canadian. Marshalltown, Nova Scotia. Second half of 1965. Oil on beaverboard. The Three Black Cats by Maud Lewis is a serial image only found in the middle to late 1960s. Lewis paid great attention to details in a subject that that remains irresitable to admirers. The tulips in another example can be found to be more open which might reflect the time of day. In this example they are more closed and a more subdued background might support that of early evening. Certainly, Lewis realized ‘mother and children’ in black cats was favoured by her clients – a salubrious intent that might reflect one for herself as well as her clients. Signed "Maud. Lewis", lower right.
Condition
Good condition. Minor losses to the lower left body of the mother cat. Uniform toning (possibly nicotine) as evidenced by the portion of the perimeter protected by the frame.
Medium
Oil on beaverboard.
Provenance
This work, along with 'Two Oxen' also offered in this sale, were purchased directly from the artist by the mother of the current owner. The winner will be provided with a letter of authenticity.
