Description
Cast by Preiss & Kassler, Berlin Germany. 1920s. Bronze, onyx and black marble. Johann Philipp Ferdinand Preiss (13 February 1882 – 29 July 1943) was a German sculptor. He was one of the leading sculptors of the Art Deco period. His works, along with those of Demetre H. Chiparus, are regarded as the pinnacle of Art Deco sculpture and are greatly valued by collectors. Features a bronze nude gymnast posing with outreaching arms on a base of onyx and black marble. Signed, "F. Preiss" rear base.
Condition
The lowest tier of the base is fractured at two corners. Another repaired fracture runs from one side to the other through the front countersunk fastener.
