Description
Marshalltown, Nova Scotia. 1965-1966. Oil on board. This vibrant spring scene by Maud Lewis is a relatively rare serial image that spans at least two decades. Lewis had a definite knack for including many joyful subjects in her work while not allowing any to be overshadowed or lost on the observer. There is a muddling of the seasons, which is typical of Maud Lewis. The cow, spring flowers, flowering fruit trees, farm buildings, roads and paths, hills on the horizon and clouds highlighted by a light blue sky, all contribute to the warmth of this work and insight into the Lewis psyche and talent. A perfectly balanced and brilliantly filled painting. Signed lower right, "Maud Lewis".
Condition
Good condition. One minor "c" shaped abrasion on the central white spot in the oxen's back. Also, a minor scratch through the white cloud, upper right.
Provenance
From the Dianne McFee Collection. Ex. Shadfly Antiques and Ingram Gallery. Letters of Authentication included.
