Description
Canadian. Marshalltown, Nova Scotia. Late 1965. Oil on beaverboard. Covered Bridge by famed Nova Scotia folk artist Maud Lewis is a serial image found only in the 1960s. What is rare about this image is Maud's use of pink (and just the right shade of pink) rather than blue for shadowing. Little else needs to be said for this favourite season that Lewis always captured so well. This composition features three sleighs; two of which are in her favoured colour of red. The prominent snow-laden evergreen trees and the novel covered bridge add strong and interesting focal points in the foreground. Signed lower right, "Maud Lewis". Marked on reverse, "Helen Perry, Stayner 1966". Offered subject to reserve.
Condition
Excellent condition.
Provenance
Helen Perry, the Great Aunt of the seller, purchased this work in Stayner, Ontario in 1966.
