Description
Canadian. Marshalltown, Nova Scotia. Late 1967. Oil on beaverboard. Oxen in Winter by famed Nova Scotia folk artist Maud Lewis. Oxen in Winter is a serial image that spans three decades. Maud's use of two whites (one of the whites being under the paint) helps to date this as one of her later works. Lewis enjoyed painting this pair of oxen flanked with conifers for herself and for her clients. One hardly has to glance at this image to appreciate Maud's adept anthropomorphizing of the oxen whose prominent eyelashes open directly at the viewer. Anyone that has looked into the big brown eyes of these companions of humankind can surely relate. Signed lower right edge, "Maud. Lewis".
