Description
Marshalltown, Nova Scotia. 1952. Watercolour and pen on paper. Paper, folded in quarters into a card. The bold harbour scene image on the cover is painted in watercolour using Lewis' usual primary colours: red, blue, yellow and green. She depicts dwellings in the background and a boat tied to a dock at the harbour. Within is a charming handwritten letter from Maud(e) Lewis to Eva Gray. Eva Gray was a teacher, cousin and a good friend of Maud Lewis. Eva rented a room in Maud's grandmother's house on Lovett Street in Yarmouth. Maud's family, the Dowley's, also lived for a while on Lovett Street. In the letter, Maud comments on weather, illness, and the cost of living. "What a hard old winter this is," she writes, and complains, "I wanted to get a new kitchen table...but they wanted $8.25 for one. To (sic) much...Everett says he'd eat off a box first than to pay that." She expresses care and concern for her correspondent Eva's illness and admits, "There's always something to worry about." This special discovery has allowed admirers to achieve greater insight into world, works and soul of Maud Lewis. Letter is dated, "Marshalltown, March 1952" and signed, "Maude XXX".
