Description
Canadian. Picton, Ontario. c1870. Salt-Glazed Stoneware. RARE. Very few examples of decorated stoneware featuring animals such as horses and cattle are known to exist. This "fresh to the market" example features a stylized horse decoration and the numeral "4" in cobalt blue beneath the potter's mark. G.I. (George) Lazier was the third potter to operate the Picton pottery; initially established in 1849 by William Hart. It should be noted that during Lazier's tenure (1864-1879), all pieces produced were stamped "Picton, C.W." (Canada West) even though the bulk of his production occurred following Confederation in 1867. Stamped, "G.I. Lazier / Picton, C.W." / 4".
Condition
One tight spider hairline crack in an "X" formation can be seen beneath the lip on the reverse side. It extends between 2" and 2½" in three directions and upward through the lip where it then tapers downward inside the crock for about another 4".
