ARTIST
Artist Steve Sutch (1907-1992) was born near Regina, Saskatchewan, and later settled in Brantford, Ontario where he spent nearly 60 years of his life. A father of five, Sutch laboured for many years on the railroads, tobacco fields, logging camps and sawmills. It was not until retirement when he took up carving, sculpting and drawing. A unique artist, Sutch's works cannot be categorized solely as 'carvings' or 'sculptures', but rather 'mixed media' as he incorporated many unconventional materials into his works. He would often adorn his wooden sculptures with clothing made from fabric scraps, and hair made from yarn. Sutch's works are humorous and insightful; themes that are especially relevant in his drawings. Sutch's work can be found in private collections across North America.

Description
Brantford, Ontario. c1970. Pen on cardboard. Mounted on board. Steve Sutch was a creative powerhouse, constantly creating folk art carvings, furniture of his own design, and many drawings which he made on cardboard salvaged from the insides of cereal boxes. This red and black pen drawing of a boy walking towards a man is a fine example of his imagination. He is followed by a dog and a predominantly red cat. Slight red colouring can be seen in the faces of the man and boy. Signed "S. Sutch" towards the bottom right.

Yellowing to cardboard.
