ARTIST

Robert Whale (1805-1887) was one of the first professional artists to work in what is now southwestern Ontario. Born in England, Whale immigrated to western Canada in 1864, eventually relocating and settling in Brantford, Ontario. He is best known for a handful of frequently reproduced landscapes - panoramic views of Hamilton and Dundas from the Niagara Escarpment and of Niagara Falls. He also specialized in portraiture and genre painting. Whale belonged to a generation of largely immigrant painters who strove to adapt traditional European methods and conventions to the depiction of North American subjects. Typical examples of Whale's work are to be found in the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Art Gallery of Hamilton, the Royal Ontario Museum, among others. His work can also be found in numerous private and corporate collections.

Description

Canadian. 1859. Oil on canvas. Depicted is a Saturday, October 2, 1858 race during the Royal Canadian Yacht Club Regatta's inaugural year. The Regatta welcomed yachts and open boats to the event off of the Scarborough Bluffs in Toronto. The $50 prize for open boats was won by the flirt; one minute and nine seconds ahead of her competitors (See Robertson's Landmarks of Toronto). This is an excellent example of the historical renderings of Canada's own Robert R. Whale. Signed lower right corner, "R. Whale 59". Offered subject to reserve.
