American or English. Federal/Regency period. Oil under glass. Birdseye maple frame. A reverse on glass painting depicting the naval engagement between HMS Shannon and the American frigate Chesapeake, near Boston Harbour during the War of 1812. The HMS Shannon prevailed and the battle between Shannon and Chesapeake became a topic of national pride. Scripted, "Action between "Shannon and Chesapeake". June 1st 1813" beneath image.
Condition
Minor black paint loss to the frame and in the reverse-painted banner containing the script.
