Description
Tavistock, Ontario. 1878-1885. Earthenware. An earthenware pottery was reported operating in Tavistock from 1878 to 1885. In the Perth County Gazetteer & Business Directory for 1878-79, Wendlin B. Schuler, the brother of Henry Schuler who had previously worked in Paris, Ont., was reported producing "flint enamelled and common earthenware" (Early Ontario Potters, David Newlands, p.112). By the year 1881, Wendlin Schuler had moved on to take over a pottery on Darling Street in Brantford, Ont. (Newlands p.147). Incised underneath, "W.B.S.".
Condition
A 1" and 1/4" chip visible to the upper left side portion of the scalloped edge. A faint hairline extends underneath and terminates at the belly of the lion. Minor chip visible to the nose.
