Description
Four (4) items. Canadian. 1890s. Nickel plated cast iron. Trader banks were given on loan to families to encourage the practice of saving. Once coins were inserted, only the Trader's Bank representative could unlock the bank to then deposit the coins. As a savings device, it proved to be an unwieldy process and the program was quickly abandoned. Following this, many of the banks were said to have been destroyed. This lot also includes two (2) pencils, one of which is a mechanical pencil, and a framed Traders Bank note. Marked, "Property of the Traders Bank of Canada - Registered By AE Jarvis 1891 - The Traders Bank Sole Licensee", on the roof. Embossed, "The Traders Bank of Canada - Colborne St." on the front panel, "Colborne St." on the rear panel and "Traders Bank - Yonge St." on either end panel. Inner metal box insert has four compartments, each bearing a different stamped number to identify the family member/depositor. Retains original surface exhibiting only minor wear in areas (most notable in the upper and lower quarters). The box insert and ramps are complete and in good condition with only minor losses to one of the wooden partitions. From the Graham J.F. Jones Collection. 10 3/4" x 10 5/16" x 5 1/8".
