Description
American. 3rd Quarter 19th C. An historic and exceptionally carved and painted hardwood folk art cane that appears to commemorate US President Abraham Lincoln. Carved in relief is the name, "Judge Chas. S. Coxe" on neck of cane with Lincoln at the foot of Christ. It features a well carved encased ball, Christ on the cross, a winding snake with foot in its mouth. The carving ends with what appears as Abraham Lincoln, in a top hat pointing upwards and inscription, "behold the healer". Coxe, born July 31, 1792, joined the Philadelphia bar in 1828. He served as District Attorney of Philadelphia and later as Associate Judge of the District Court of Philadelphia. The Judge Coxe cane seems to link Political leader Abraham Lincoln with Christian principles. Good condition with minor abrasions to paint. 35.75(L) x 1.25(W) x 3.5 handle. From the Jim Fleming Collection. $3500/5000.
