Description
Quebec. Mid-20th C. A remarkable carved diorama by Andre Bourgault. Features a heart-warming parlour scene with all generations enjoying the music of a seated fiddler. 16(H) x 24.75(L) x 18(D)". From the Marty Osler Collection. $900/1200. Andre Bourgault (1898-1957) was a Quebec-based sculptor, woodcarver and painter who was active in the mid-20th century. He began carving in 1929 after his brothers, carvers Medard and Jean-Julien, invited him to join them at Medard's woodcarving studio. Andre soon discovered his passion and talent for the craft, and opened his own studio in 1935 where he continued to carve and began teaching lessons. While his brothers focused on religious-themed work, Andre kept his focus strictly on folk art, creating sculptures of people and animals with intricate detail work. The wooden works of the Bourgault brothers became very popular because of their folkloric and traditional themes, which focus on the rural and religious values of Quebec. Andre's works are exhibited at the Musée de sculpture sur bois des Anciens Canadiens in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli and the McCord Museum in Montreal, among other locations.
