Description
Canadian. Ca: 1955. Mixed media on beaverboard. Winter Sleigh Ride by Maud Lewis. This delightful and early Christmas season scene was one of the artist's favourite childhood memories and she has masterfully incorporated a white horse with white snow in the background. It is not a common scene but is one similar to a later image used for a series of Canadian postage stamps. Signed "Lewis" lower right. Dated in pencil on reverse, "11/24/61". Retained in period frame labelled Livingston Galleries, New York. One minor flake/loss to the face of the rider with the reins. Board measures 9 x 11.5". $25000/28000. Maud Lewis (1901–1970) has become one of Canada’s most renowned artists, the subject of numerous monographs, novels, plays, documentaries, and even a feature film. She was born into relative comfort and obscurity, and died in poverty, though enjoying national fame. She overcame severe physical challenges to create a unique artistic style, and sparked a boom in folk art in her home province. Though she rarely left her tiny house, her works have travelled around the world, and in the decades since her death she has become an iconic figure, a symbol of Nova Scotia, and a beloved character in the popular imagination.
