Description
Prince Edward Island. Ca: 1840. Made of pine, ash, and tin. This documented domed top storage box is decorated with four horses, cubes, compass stars, and a tin heart-shaped escutcheon. The original owner has incised the initials "JA" with block letters "Newman" into the front. The Newman family came from Ireland to PEI circa 1825 and then to Ontario (Bruce County). Further pencilled inscription inside. Good condition with minor paint wear. 31.5(L) x 16.25(W) x 20(H)". Illustrated in "Canadian Folk art to 1950" (Rowan/Fleming, p.227). $2000/2500.
