Toronto, Ontario. Dated 1919. Oil on board. A dramatic naive depiction of the British WWI hospital ship Gloucester Castle. This ship was torpedoed by a German U-boat off the Isle of Wight in March, 1917. The image shows a partially submerged ship with lifeboats in action. It is retained in a recent figured maple frame with liner. Signed lower right, "G. McEwen Deuchars, Toronto". Surface has been cleaned but with remnants of old varnish and a few abrasions. 34.75 x 40.75". Sight: 28.75 x 34.75".
