Description
American. 1860s. This highly collectable sewing machine, often referred to as the Holy Grail to collectors, was manufactured by the Grover & Baker Sewing Machine Company of Boston, Mass. which was in operation from 1851-1875. It is the first portable sewing machine whereby the case becomes a sewing surface and the machine is able to be serviced without removing it from the case. It produces a unique double chain-stitch using two spools of thread. This example comes with two keys. The gold work is mostly all gone but the brass fittings remain bright. Horseless Carriage Museum, Fenelon Falls, Ont. 11 x 13 x 9.5".
