Addendum by Alan Deacon: Black Truck is a rare serial image by Maud Lewis. In other words, there are similar paintings but no two works are exactly alike. This work is a springtime painting with daffodils in the foreground with blossoming cherry trees and a house filling much of the middle ground. The painting has a high horizon as like a medieval painter she wants to fill the board. The work is on Masonite and measures 11” x 14”. The Black Truck painting had come from John Kinnear (1920-2003) an Ontario artist. Kinnear was the only artist to correspond with Maud Lewis from the time she became famous, in the mid 1960s, until her death in 1970. Kinnear would send Maud Lewis pre-primed Masonite boards, brushes, and requested paints. In return Maud would send the finished paintings for Kinnear to sell and he would return the proceeds to Maud in Marshalltown. In this respect John Kinnear acted like Maud’s agent in Ontario. Since 1967 this painting has only been owned by Kinnear, and then the Demas’. I do not recall a Maud Lewis truck painting ever coming for sale at auction. The consignor of the Black Truck painting has also consigned letters written by Maud Lewis to John Kinnear."

Description
"Black Truck" by Maud Lewis, 1967. Originally from the private collection of John H. Kinnear. Lewis painted many different vehicles that were part of her life and were inspirations for these vehicular subjects. Black was her colour of choice. The truck, less often seen will no doubt fill a gap for collections focusing on this aspect. From the Estate of Irene and Tony Demas. Excellent condition. Maud Lewis. Signed: "Maud. Lewis". Oil paint on board. Canadian. c1960. Sight: 11" H x 14" W. CODE-PFA
