Description
Collection includes three letters from Maud to John H. Kinnear dated 1966 to 1967. According to Alan Deacon, Canada's foremost expert on Maud, there are few letters written by Maud Lewis known to exist. This offers a rare glimpse into Maud's world, illustrating the care and consideration she took with each one of her pieces. Kinnear was the only artist to correspond with Maud Lewis from the time she became famous, in the mid 1960s, until her death in 1970. Kinnear would send Maud Lewis pre-primed Masonite boards, brushes, and requested paints. In return Maud would send the finished paintings for Kinnear to sell and he would return the proceeds to Maud in Marshalltown. In this respect John Kinnear acted like Maud’s agent in Ontario. Kinnear supplied Maud with the material on which "The Black Truck" (lot 337) was painted. Good condition. Maud Lewis. Signed: "Maud. Lewis". Ink on paper. Canadian. 1966-1967. Letters: from 9" to 10" in Height. CODE-HISO
