Description
A fine and rare early 20th century cold painted and bone mounted (chryselephantine) figural bronze of a female dancer by Demetre Chiparus. The figure modelled standing with arms outstretched, the textured bodice and multi-layered skirt decorated with cold painted decoration, the expressive face and delicate sculpted hands skillfully carved in bone. Mounted and signed on a wedge shaped and striated russet onyx base decorated with a band of contrasting light and dark onyx segments, the underside engraved 'Made in France'. Demetre Haralamb Chiparus (1886-1947) Romanian. After travelling to Italy in 1909 to study with sculptor Raffaello Romanelli, Chiparus then left for Paris in 1912 to study at the Ecole des Beaux Arts under Antonin Mercie and Jean Boucher. It was while in Paris between the years 1914 to 1933 that Chiparus created the majority of his works, specifically during the early 1920's which is when he created several of his now iconic works, many of which having been greatly influenced by dancers he had observed at the Folies Berger and the Ballets Russe. It was during this period that he created this fine example, circa 1925. From the Jack Reingold Collection. In very good overall condition. Demétre Haralamb Chiparus. Signed: "D.H. Chiparus, Made in France". Bronze, bone, onyx. French. Art Deco, 1920s-1930s. 17.25" H x 8" W x 4.25" D. CODE-BRO
