Description
This 5 gallon stoneware crock is stamped "Pugsley & Bailey / General Merchants / Selkirk Ont / 5". Selkirk, settled in 1800, is a small community located southwest of Hamilton on the shores of Lake Erie. The floral decoration on this crock suggests that it was manufactured at the Brantford Pottery during William Welding's tenure (1873-1894). From the Alan Emerson Collection. A very faint hairline crack extends from the word "merchants" to the right lug handle. Several other very fine, and in some cases barely noticeable, hairline cracks are evident; some of which likely occurred during the manufacturing process. A couple of very small chips exist on the rim and several patches of light staining are scattered around the perimeter. W.E. Welding. Salt-glazed stoneware. Canadian. c1880. 12.5" H x 11.5" Diameter.
