Description
This 6 gallon crock is stamped "Morton & Bennett / Brantford. C.W." followed by a stylized "6" and features a well executed floral decoration. The brief partnership between Morton & Bennett, lasting only from 1856 until the spring of 1857, was formed when Justus Morton, the founder of the Brantford Pottery seven years earlier, entered into an arrangement with A.B. Bennett (a wealthy entrepreneur and partner in the Goold and Bennett Foundry) for the purpose of obtaining additional capitalization for the pottery. Following the demise of the partnership, the pottery was sold to James Woodyatt. Examples of stoneware bearing the name Morton & Bennett are seldom seen as very few survived from this brief period. From the Alan Emerson Collection. A vertical hairline crack from within the decoration extends to the bottom of the crock and continues into the base where it's intersected by a second smaller crack. A couple of small chips and glaze rubs are evident on the exterior and two chips exist in the base. The two darker brown patches just above the base on the front of the crock are kiln burns and would have occurred during the firing process. Morton & Bennett. Salt-glazed stoneware. Canadian. 1856. 13" H x 13" Diameter. CODE-POT
