Description
This 2 gallon crock is stamped "H.T. Barker, / General Merchant, / Cor. Huron & Vincent Sts. / Stratford. / 2". Henry Barker, formerly a shoemaker in the town of Stratford, Ontario, is listed in the 1871 Provincial Directory as being a general merchant with his business located on Huron Street. The floral decoration on this jug suggests that it was produced at the Brantford Pottery by William E. Welding during the time that he owned and operated the business (1873-1894). From the Alan Emerson Collection. Other than a few small glaze flakes and a couple of kiln burns, the crock is in very good condition. The discolouration seen on the rim over the right handle is an accumulation of glaze. Nice example of a small merchant crock with four lines of script. W.E. Welding. Salt-glazed stoneware. Canadian. c1880. 9" H x 9.5" Diameter. CODE-POT
