Description
This 4 gallon stoneware crock is stamped "D. Sanderson / Hardware / Gorrie / 4". Gorrie, Ontario, is a small community located northwest of Listowel east of Wingham. The crock was manufactured at the Brantford Pottery during the time that W.E. Welding owned and operated the business (1873-1894). From the Alan Emerson Collection. The vertical crack and staining seen beneath the town name may have been a flaw when the crock was fired however, it does extend for another couple of inches into the decoration as a fine hairline crack. A couple of small potstone chips are evident in the slip just inside the crock. Overall, an attractive merchant crock from a small community. W.E. Welding. Salt-glazed stoneware. Canadian. c1880. 11.5" H x 10.5" Diameter. CODE-POT
