Description
This 2 gallon stoneware jug is stamped "James R. Burns / Toronto / 2". Following his brief venture with business partner William Campbell (Burns & Campbell 1879-1881), Burns carried on business by himself at the Don Bridge Pottery in Toronto until 1887. Burns was the last in a succession of potters to operate the pottery before it was dismantled. A couple of small glaze rubs exist and a potstone chip is evident to the right of the floral decoration. A small chip is present on the inner edge of the lip just to the right of the handle. What appears to be a chip on the left side of the lip is merely a manufacturing flaw as it's under the glaze. Some significant areas of staining exist as seen in the photos. James Burns. Salt-glazed stoneware. Canadian. 1880s. 14.5" H x 8.5" Diameter. CODE-POT
