Description
Stamped "George Bernhardt / Wines & Liquors / Opera House Block / Galt Ont / 2". Bernhardt initially conducted his wholesale and retail wine and liquor business in the Opera House Block, located in Queen's Square (Grand Ave. & Main St.) in the town of Galt (now part of Cambridge). In 1897, he relocated his business to the more spacious and recently constructed quarters in the Iroquois Block (built in 1894 and located 3 blocks away at Main & Wellington Streets) where his business continued to thrive until his death in 1930. The floral decoration on this jug suggests that it was produced at the Brantford Pottery by William E. Welding during the time that he owned and operated the business (1873-1894). From the Alan Emerson Collection. A potstone chip exists in the center of the jug directly beneath a leaf in the floral decoration. A few small chips are present on the underside of the jug while an area of surface loss approximately an inch long, which may very well have been a manufacturing flaw, exists on the front of the lip. Overall, a well executed decoration on a jug that displays quite nicely. W.E. Welding. Salt-glazed stoneware. Canadian. c1885. 14" H x 8" Diameter. CODE-POT
