Description
Lot consists of a 3 gallon stoneware jug stamped "N. Eberhardt / Toronto. C.W." along with a stylized "3" to the right of the inscription. The Don Bridge Pottery, established in 1852, was located on the east side of present day Broadview Ave., between Queen St. and Eastern Ave., in Toronto. Eberhardt, who owned and operated the pottery from 1863 to 1879, was the second in a succession of potters to run the business during the pottery's 35 years of operation. A couple of small traces of overpaint are evident and a horizontal crack exists at the midpoint of the handle. As well, a potstone chip is evident to the right of the decoration and a larger vertical chip exists beneath that towards the base of the jug. The horizontal lines that encircle the center of the jug are not cracks and were likely caused by a "rib"; the tool used by the potter to shape the rim and body. Nicholas Eberhardt. Salt-glazed stoneware. Canadian. c1865. 15.5" H x 10" Diameter. CODE-POT
