Description
Rare. Among the most highly sought and iconic American sporting advertising, Winchester's cartridge boards are monumental historic displays. Few survived intact due to their size and the fact that they were often displayed in store windows and areas exposed to light. Lithographed hardboard with an applied representation of one of Winchester's earliest lines of ammunition. Certainly the rarest of all of the cartridge boards issued by Winchester. In untouched, original condition with oxidization, minor shrinkage and minor staining. Three (3) reverse punctures flank the "45 Sharp's 2 6/10 in" cartridge, the largest being 1" (the scab is present, as shown). The group of four (4) cartridges at lower left corner show varying degrees of loss. It requires '41 Short', 58 Carbine and 58 Musket bullets. There are two minor stains to right quarter, center. The board has a shallow warp that pulls it slightly from frame, (see sliver visible at top left side). Retained in the original frame. The frame is intact, structurally solid and retains original varnish. There is a 2" open tear to the paper backing on reverse - possibly to secure a loose cartridge. Retained by the family owners since prohibition. Winchester. Marked "John A. Lowell & Co. Boston Mass."lower center edge. Lithographed hardboard, metal. American. 1884. 38" x 28" x 2".
