Description
A relief carved panel by Sam Spencer (1898-1988) of two Native Americans sitting on the ground smoking their pipes with large tree branches hanging overhead and a fence on either side of them (seen in the foreground). In original paint and a dark varnished surface. Spencer grew up on a farm in Punnichy, Saskatchewan, near several First Nations reserves where he made many friends; he began carving in in 1927, eventually moving to Saskatoon in the 1940s where he retired and concentrated on his carving, primarily relief carved pictures that he did for himself, never for re-sale.
