Description
Canadian. Oil on board. J.J. Kenyon (1862-1937) was a photographer and painter. He attended fairs to capture images of prize-winning animals, which he later painted. He also painted money portraits of the winning horses at race tracks in New York and Kentucky. This work was recently discovered in Newtonville, Ontario, it was previously unknown to collectors. The horse Lexington's owner Steadman Fox Bebee was born on July 12, 1831, in Hope Township, Durham County, Ontario. Steadman was known to have lived in New York, USA, Meaford and Grey County, Ontario, where his horse was painted. The name Lexington was likely a reference to Lexington, Kentucky, "The Horse Capital of the World". Kenyon has given special attention to the detail in the background, depicting the operations of an early working farm. Signed, "J.J. Kenyon Oil" lower left quarter. Titled, "LEXINGTON No. 207 / The Property of S.F. BEBEE. Meaford, Ont." lower center. Sight 18 x 24". Gilt plaster frame exhibits minor losses from the extreme corners. CODE:PFA
