Description
Canadian. Oil on board. J.W. Beatty was a forerunner in the movement which became the Group of Seven. Beatty was painting at a time prior to the rise and influence of the Group of Seven, having started out following more sombre coloration of the Dutch School. When he later befriended Group members and associates such as Tom Thomson and A.Y. Jackson, he was in turn influenced by their painting with the consequence of his works becoming more colourful. Beatty became a very influential teacher at the Ontario College of Art. Beatty also helped Lawren Harris get elected as a member of the Ontario Society of Artists. He also nominated J.E.H. MacDonald for membership in the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. Signed, J.W. Beatty" lower right edge. Titled, "Late Afternoon Meadowvale" on J.W. Beatty studio tag, verso. Sight 5 x 7".
