Description
Canadian. Oil on canvas. Pittenweem Fyfe, Scotland. A nearly identical oil on canvas by Watson was sold through Sotheby Parke Bernet in October of 1976. A loan agreement from when the painting was exhibited at Homer Watson House & Gallery in 1993. When Homer Watson's talent caught the attention of the British Royal Family in the late 19th century, his career flourished leaving behind one of the greatest legacies in the Canadian Art World. Oscar Wilde coined him to be ‘the Canadian Constable.’ When works by this artist are viewed collectively it becomes immediately apparent that he was capturing the industrious endeavors of the pioneers and farmers. He captured the opening up of the forest region but also incorporated, more than many artists dramatic environmental events such as flooding and ice jams as well as atmospheric effects including moonlight, ‘after the rain’ along with pending storms and droughts. Signed, "Homer Watson" lower right edge. Gallery tag from Matthew Bros. & Co., 95 Yonge St. Toronto, General Art Dealers" verso. Sight 14 x 22". Don and Joyce Blyth collection. CODE:PFA
