Canadian. Ralph made gunning decoys for 70+ years, his style influenced by Ben Schmidt of Michigan. The first, a standard size Malpage Black Duck or Hen Mallard is original and in excellent condition possibly from the 1970’s. Feather detail; primary carving and classic head carving are all present in this decoy that illustrates the influence Ben Schmidt had on this commercial decoy maker. Rigged but with keel removed. 6 3/4 x 17 x 6". The second, an oversize Black Duck in original paint and excellent condition is a good example of his gunning decoys. Circa 1950. Very detailed feather carving; simple paint pattern; cocked turned head; good working keel all in an oversized decoy are a testament to Ralph’s experience as a serious waterfowl hunter himself. 10 x 18 1/2 x 8 1/2".
