Description
Large English marching band drum. English, probably 1896-1933. Constructed with wooden sides, likely ash or elm. Fitted with brass carrying hardware, manilla rope and vellum skins. The sides decoratively painted in blue, red, white and green. Painted inscription reads “Netherton Brass Band”. Also, with a coat of arms with inscription in Latin. The maker’s name is provided on the side as “Besson & Co. Ltd, 198 Euston Road, London”. Besson became a limited company in 1896 and worked from the Euston Road location until 1933. The Netherton Brass Band is most likely a Netherton Colliery band from the north of England. Inscribed, "Netherton Brass Band" and "Besson & Co. Ltd. 198 Euston Road, London N.W". 32" (diam.), 18" depth. Skins exhibits heavy soil, scattered stains with one side punctured at center. Rope exhibits minor sections of fray and one tear. CODE:FUR
