Fine telescope on stand, English, Mid-19th century. Brass, leather and glass. Engraved signature reads “Sam’l J. Browning (late Stebbing) 66 High St. Portsmouth. Optician Ec to Her Majesty & the R.Y.S.” The sleeve of the scope wrapped in hand stitched leather in good condition. The telescope mounts to a finely crafted tripod stand with folding cabriole legs, and with a pivoting, tilting mount to the top. Browning published a notice in the Hampshire Telegraph for May 15, 1847 indicating that he had taken over the business of George Stebbing. He worked in Portsmouth from 1847 to 1862.
