Description
Known to collectors simply as "The Black Cat Clock", this piece has been considered as the most significant examples of advertising ever produced in Canada. Ironically, the script on the featured product boasts, "leads all others | challenge the world to produce its superior". In profuse detail, the lithograph on tin depicts a black cat, with its jaw lowered and whiskers erect, engaging with the product in pursuit of something beyond. Marked lower left, MacDonald Mfg. Co. Limited, Toronto. 23 1/2 x 17 1/2 x 2". The gilt accents have some toning but remain vibrant. Small flecks of paint loss to the perimeter, and between chapter rings "12" and "1". Fine scratches exist primarily in the lower right corner, through the number "10", and at the midpoint of the right edge. Slight ripple on the left edge, and in the lower left corner. Minor touch-up to the outer border in the lower right and left corners. Traces of underpaint on the bottom of the wooden frame. Clock not functioning. Ex. Mike Del Castello and Kim & Mary Kokles Collection. CODE:CLO
