Description
American. 1880s. This extremely rare and well preserved board is mounted within an oak frame measuring 41.25" x 54.25". The top and bottom lengths of the frame have relief-carved decorative gesso panels with raised lettering "Trade U.M.C. Mark" and "The Union Metallic Cartridge Co." The display panel features numerous cartridges grouped by category and forming a diamond shape around an elk scene vignette. Over time the cartridges have developed a nice patina consistent with age. Some general fading is evident on the display panel and there are a few small chips in the plaster on the ornate inner frame. Please refer to the photos. The Union Metallic Cartridge Company was formed through the acquisition of Crittenden & Tibbals Mfg. (of Coventry, Conn.) and C.D. Leet (of Springfield, Mass.) by Schuyler, Hartley & Graham; a New York sporting goods firm. The company set up their manufacturing facility in Bridgeport, Conn. and was incorporated in September 1867. This display board featuring UMC's extensive product line was found at the Weber Supply Company (Kitchener, Ont.) in the 1950's by a doctor. The Weber Supply Co. was founded in 1855 in Berlin, Ont. (now Kitchener) and initially was a fabricator and supplier of tools, carriage makers' furnishings, hardware, etc. Over the decades, the business continued to grow and diversify and at the break of World War II, was enlisted by the Canadian Government as a manufacturer and supplier to the munitions and aircraft industries.
