Description
This primitive pint Atkinson C.W. (Canada West) stone bottle is believed to be the only example known to exist. This exceptional bottle was first photographed and documented in the book "Primitive Stoneware Bottles of Canada" (2002) by Scott Wallace & Phil Culhane. William Atkinson was one of the earlier bottlers to establish a business in Guelph. The 1867 Gazetteer & Directory for the County of Wellington lists him as being a "ginger beer brewer" with his premises located on McDonell (now spelt MacDonell) Street above Norfolk Street. Research conducted to date suggests that he was in business from 1867 through 1901. As his business grew and prospered, he relocated 5 blocks away to 52 Liverpool Street (corner of Liverpool & Dublin Streets). The lettering, debossed above the shoulder and highlighted with a cobalt blue wash, states "W ATKINSON GUELPH, C.W.". The bottle exhibits a tiny flake off of the underside of the base and a small chip from inside edge of the lip with resulting stable and isolated fine hairline crack through the blob. 7 x 3" (diam).
