Description
Canadian. 1870s. Stoneware. Features rare horse decoration in cobalt slip. Debossed, "F. P. Goold Brantford" upper front shoulder. 16 x 10" (diam). What appears to be a small faint hairline (1.50" in length) at the back of the jug travelling upwards from the base is not a crack as there isn't any apparent separation in the clay or glaze. This mark likely would have occurred during the firing process. Three small chips/voids exist on the underside of the base. A small through "stable" crack (1.75" in length) in the mouth of the jug angles downward from the lip above the potter's name. A small crescent shaped sliver is present on the front of the lip and a chip (approx. 1 x 0.5") exists on the right side of the mouth. Continuing downwards from this chip is a very fine stable hairline crack measuring 1.25" in length. A few very small nibbles are present along the inside of the lip and a small narrow chip is evident directly above the "3" and below the letter "F" in Brantford. Please refer to photos. This jug with the exceptional and extremely rare horse decoration was produced by F.P. (Franklin) Goold during his tenure at the Brantford pottery (1859-1867).
