Description
Debossed, "Robt Rutherford Guelph". 14.5 x 9" (diam). Jug manufactured at the Brantford pottery featuring an outstanding bird decoration was made during the tenure of F.P. Goold (1859-1867). A small flake (5/8" x 1/4") off of the front of the lip with a tight hairline terminating 1/2" below the chip exists. A very faint hairline (approx. 3" in length) running horizontally from the base of the handle to the right likely occurred during the firing. Another very fine hairline (approx. 2") runs from the mouth of the jug downwards to the left of the merchant's name and as there doesn't appear to be a separation in the glaze, was also likely caused while the jug was in the kiln. This jug is pictured on page 63 and the cover of "Jugs & Crocks of the Guelph Merchants" by Joyce Blyth. CODE:POT
