Description
Debossed, "W J Brown & Co Importers of Wines, Liquors Teas & Groceries Alma Block Guelph CW". 13 x 9" (diam). William Brown was one of the earlier merchants to establish a business in Guelph. An 1850 advertisement announced the opening of his establishment two doors west of Thorp's Hotel facing Market Square. A number of chips are present around the mouth of the jug. The impression and burnt area on the back of the jug would have occurred during the firing process in the kiln and as such, is not considered as damage. The floral decoration suggests that this jug was made by one of the early potters at the Brantford pottery. This jug is pictured on page 15 of "Jugs & Crocks of the Guelph Merchants" by Joyce Blyth.
